9:10am – 10:10am Wellness without Woo Woo: Real Self-Care for Skeptics and Tough-Minded Professionals

What is the science behind self-care? Where do we turn when we are turned off by crystals and chakras and all things woo woo? Learning to set boundaries, regulate our emotions, and live according to our values is more challenging than buying essential oils and expensive smoothies, but also creates the conditions for true and long-lasting improvement to our mental and physical health. Based in part on the book Real Self Care by Dr. Pooja Lakshmin.

10:10am – 11:10am DEI and Wellness: How to Create a Firm Culture That Embraces Both

DEI practices are not only good for our office relationships; they’re essential to a healthy and thriving staff. This panel will look at the ways these themes intersect and suggest strategies for building a firm culture that embraces both.

11:10am – 12:00pm Our brains at work – the neuroscience of productivity and everyday practices to maintain optimal mental fitness

Like physical fitness, mental fitness requires attention, intention, and a bit of discipline. This panel will dive into the neuroscience of productivity to help us understand how and why to incorporate best practices for mental fitness into our routines. Based on research published by David Rock, PhD, and the Neuroleadership Institute.

1:45pm – 2:45pm Toxic Workplaces – What does this really mean, do you have one, and what to do about it. An exploration of research published by MIT Sloan Management Review.

The word “toxic” is used frequently to describe problematic people, places, and situations. As employers cope with the challenges of hiring and maintaining talent in the midst of the “Great Resignation,” we need to understand what the data shows about why people quit their jobs and what employees mean when they use the word “toxic” to describe a workplace. This panel will dive into the research as well as offer proven actions we can take to create firm cultures that retain great people.

2:45pm – 3:15pm How to take good breaks: Using yoga and meditation techniques to achieve maximum renewal of focus, energy, and productivity in minimal time, at your desk, and without yoga pants

Yoga and meditation do not require a major undertaking. You don’t have to join a studio, change your clothes, or go anywhere to deploy them on your own behalf and use them to benefit your health and productivity. In this session, a certified yoga instructor will demonstrate some yoga maneuvers that can be done in our work clothes and will quickly recharge us to make the most of the rest of our day, Additionally, we’ll learn some quick meditation and breath practices that can help us clear our mind between tasks, to ensure that our attention is as strong and effective as possible by the end of our break time.

3:25pm – 4:25pm Our Bodies’ Red Flags: How to Pay Attention and Be a Better Advocate for Your Own Health

What is our body telling us? What does it mean if we’re feeling extra fatigued, foggy–headed, or frequently sick? In this panel, we’ll hear from medical experts about the kinds of conditions that can cause these symptoms, important tests and labs, how to interpret health measurements, and which health screens to schedule when.

4:25pm – 5:25pm Solutions for Burnout, Compassion Fatigue, and Secondary Trauma

Have you seen the statistics on attorney mental health? They’re not good. In this panel, we’ll learn about the signs and symptoms of burnout, compassion fatigue, and secondary trauma, and talk about resources and strategies for helping ourselves and our employees prevent and recover from them.

The new realities of remote work are rife with new challenges for managers and leaders: how to develop strong working relationships with people when we rarely share the same space, how to ensure that remote staff work securely and productively, and how to remove staff that need to go without compromising our humanity or team morale.

10:00am – 10:45am Freedom from Email: Leveraging VAs to Free Yourself from the Bondage of the Inbox

Email does not have to control your life or zap all of your energy. This panel will share tips, tools, and stories of virtual assistants who have learned to successfully tame the email dragon for their attorney bosses so that the lawyers can focus on what’s most important.

What are the differences between coaching (business, life, executive), consulting, therapy, support groups, and masterminds? Includes speakers’ reading and podcast lists, a review of free and paid resources in Texas and around the USA, favorite apps, good gadgets, and shortcuts to boost your well-being now and for many seasons to come.

11:30am – 12:15pm The Business Case for Wellness: How and Why the Most Successful Companies Promote Health and Balance

Lawyers and law firms are notorious for our crazy work hours. Our profession sometimes demands that we sacrifice our evenings or weekends to meet deadlines. This does not mean, however, that we should throw the idea of health and balance out the window. Studies show that companies that help their staff prioritize wellness outperform those that don’t. This panel will dive into the data and share some actionable strategies for leveraging wellness practices to improve firm performance and profitability.
